Swim Cap Fit and Care Guide

Finding Your Perfect Fit

A well-fitting swim cap should feel snug without causing discomfort or headaches. It should stay in place during your swim and not lift at the edges. If it slips during activity or leaves deep pressure marks after removal, it may not be the right fit for you.

Our Swim Caps are standard size, they are quite stretchy though, so they can cater to medium to longer hair depending on thickness and personal preference for tightness. We will be getting longer haired versions soon.

Tips for a Great Fit

Short or Fine Hair

Short or fine hair generally tucks in easily. Focus on getting the cap low over your forehead and ears for a secure, watertight seal. Silicone caps tend to grip well against shorter hair lengths.

Long or Thick Hair

Longer or thicker hair adds volume inside the cap, so getting the cap on correctly is important:

  • Twist or bundle your hair into a low bun at the back of your head before putting on the cap — avoid high buns, which create pressure points at the crown.
  • Gather loose sections, including baby hairs around the hairline, and tuck them in last.
  • Use both hands to stretch the cap gradually from front to back rather than pulling hard at one side.

Baby Hairs and Edges

Fine hairs around the forehead and temple can be tricky to contain. Try smoothing them flat before placing the cap, then adjust the front edge of the cap to cover them. A damp fingertip can help press short strands under the cap edge.

Putting the Cap On

  1. Hold the cap with both thumbs inside, stretching it open.
  2. Place the front edge just above your eyebrows.
  3. Pull the cap back over your head in one smooth motion, distributing it evenly.
  4. Adjust the edges over your ears and along the hairline to remove gaps.
  5. Tuck in any stray strands with your fingertips.

Safe Removal

Pulling a swim cap off quickly can snag and break hair, especially longer or finer strands. Remove it gently:

  1. Slide your fingers under the back edge of the cap at your nape.
  2. Gradually peel the cap forward over your head — do not yank from the top or sides.
  3. If the cap feels stuck around any hair, ease it free section by section rather than pulling.

Removing the cap slowly helps preserve both your hair and the cap's elasticity over time.

Getting a Secure Fit During Your Swim

If your cap slips during use, try the following:

  • Ensure the cap is pulled fully down over the hairline — a cap that sits too high is more likely to lift.
  • Check that no large clumps of hair are bunched in one spot creating uneven pressure.
  • Wet your hair before putting the cap on — damp hair compresses more easily.

Cleaning Your Swim Cap

Chlorine and salt water can degrade swim cap materials over time. Rinsing and drying your cap after every swim will extend its life significantly.

  • After each swim: Rinse the cap thoroughly in cool, clean water to remove chlorine, salt, and sunscreen residue.
  • Washing: Hand-wash occasionally with a small amount of mild soap or baby shampoo. Avoid harsh detergents, bleach, or machine washing.
  • Temperature: Always use cool or lukewarm water — hot water can cause silicone or latex to warp or lose its shape.

Drying and Storage

  • After rinsing, gently pat the cap dry with a soft towel — do not wring or twist it.
  • Allow the cap to air dry completely before storing. Storing a damp cap can promote odour and material degradation.
  • Store the cap flat or open, away from direct sunlight, sharp objects, and extreme heat (e.g. do not leave in a hot car or on a sunny poolside).
  • Avoid folding the cap in on itself for long periods, as creases can weaken the material.

When to Replace Your Swim Cap

Even with good care, swim caps will wear out. Look for these signs that it is time for a new one:

  • Visible tears, holes, or thinning areas in the material
  • Loss of elasticity — the cap no longer returns to its original shape after use
  • Persistent slipping during swims despite correct fitting
  • Stickiness, tackiness, or a strong chemical smell that does not clear after rinsing
